  • History

BDA was founded in 1994, initially focusing on China’s fast-growing telecom sector. The firm was co-founded by Dr Bohai Zhang and Duncan Clark – the name ‘BDA’ comes from their first initials – following a conference hosted by Morgan Stanley and the Chinese government to explore financing opportunities in the sector.

By 1999, BDA became recognized also as the leading advisory firm in China’s Internet sector, following early work for the founders of Alibaba, Netease and Sina. From 2003, BDA started to expand its private equity client base. Our Managing Partner Wilbur Zou joined BDA in 2004. As China’s e-commerce market took off, BDA became increasingly active advising on investments in China’s consumer sector, today our most active area.

We also expanded our activities to include selected other Asian markets, although China remains our core focus today.
